Memo: SUNNYVALE

When Wolfe Engineering moved recently to Sunnyvale, one of its first tasks was finding a volunteer community project its employees could get involved in.

''We wanted to be active in the community where we spend most of our waking hours,'' said John Wolfe, co-founder of the company, which contracts for assembly work in the semiconductor industry.

A ribbon-cutting for Wolfe Engineering's new offices on Kifer Road was held last week. Among those attending were the employees, city and chamber of commerce officials, and Nancy Tivol, executive director of Sunnyvale Community Services (SCS).

The employees have chosen to volunteer by collecting food and packing bags for the Kids Summer Food Program, which is run through SCS. Wolfe Engineering had already ''adopted'' SCS by covering its operating expenses for a day, according to Tivol.

''Everyone wanted to help,'' said Jennie de la Cerda, the company's controller and a Sunnyvale resident. ''We have to be grateful that we have jobs today and for what God has given us. To be able to help people less fortunate in the city is very satisfying.''

Nearby sat the boxes of food donations. Among the foodstuffs, said de la Cerda, are ''staples for the young ones'': cereal, granola bars, peanut butter, and macaroni and cheese.

Because of the sluggish economy, ''traditional sources of funding are down,'' Tivol said, adding that 84 percent of SCS's revenue last year came from corporate and private sources.
